Jeff, you are missing the point by thinking globally rather than in dollars and cents. We mistakenly gave our health care system over to the insurance companies with the hope that the free market would provide us with the best care for the lowest price. Those who did this, however, did not take into account that the insurance companies in addition to competing with each other, all must show a profit to their stockholders and pay salaries and bonuses to their employes who bring in the greatest profit. Insurance companies do not make profits by collecting premiums and paying claims; insurance companies make profits by collecting premiums and by NOT paying claims. For every claim an insurance company can deny, that means much more money into the profit column. This is great for the investors in insurance companies, but it is terrible for a man whose doctor said he needs surgery, or a child with a chronic disease, or anyone that the insurance companies can find a reason not to pay. The insurance companies have violated our trust and have betrayed teh American people for profit. We who want health care reform want to have the government set up a system, a single-payer system much like Medicare whis IS a successfully run system. You say government NEVER does anything right. There you are dead wrong. Medicare works beautifully. Get the insurance companies out of it. They operate to make profits; put a well regulated government agency like Medicare in charge that is dedicated to serving the American people, not the insurance industry.
All your comparison to eastern European countries is really irrelevant.
